Wheel of Time Challenge 2010 and Commentary

Back in the excitement surrounding the release of the 12th book of the Wheel of Time, The Gathering Storm, I was alerted to Book Love Affair's Wheel of Time Challenge 2010. I wasn't sure if I wanted to participate in it at the time, but I decided to go ahead and do that the night before I left to come back up to UCLA. I've also decided I'll add my own little twist.

Every time I pick up The Wheel of Time books to start a new re-read, I promise myself I will take notes about all the little things I find (especially things I missed the last time through). Inevitably this resolve melts when I get sucked into the story and don't want to be bothered with stopping to write down my thoughts as I go. The last full read through I did was in the summer of 2008, when there were only 12 books (if you include New Spring, which I did for that re-read.) I want to read them all up to The Gathering Storm this year, preferably before Towers of Midnight, book 13, is released. The way I've decided to do this is to read basically a book a month according to the Challenge, and write down my thoughts throughout the month as I go.

January is going to be a bit tough because I'm doing New Spring and The Eye of the World. I decided to start with the prequel because I wanted to read that this year, and it fits better chronologically rather than pub date, especially for the purposes of the Challenge, which currently does not include reading New Spring. I've already finished the prequel as of a few days ago, so I will try to do most of the posting about that this week. I will probably do a brief summary of each chapter and then some commentary. In the interests of time, this probably won't be as extensive as the summary and commentary Leigh Butler does for her Wheel of Time Re-Read at Tor.com. I'm doing each book in about a month, so I don't really have the time to do too much. I will link to the relevant Tor.com posts in my posts. (New Spring hasn't been done yet, not sure when Leigh will do it, but presumably she will eventually cover it.)

I'd also like to state for the record that this is what I hope to do during the year. I'm already a bit behind due to an illness last week which I'm still working to recover from and I have just recently hit upon some computer issues which are rather worrying. Right now I am in school, which is fairly busy, but I can make time for this, I think. The unknown quantity will be when I graduate this June and (hopefully) start my career. I don't know yet where I will be working or what type of time I'll have to continue this read through and commentary. We'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

(I haven't really utilized this place as I first intended to so far, so this will hopefully get me writing up posts regularly. Ideally I'll have time for some non-WOT stuff as well. Also, I really need to spend some time customizing the look of this thing, because currently it is rather boring. The days are not long enough. I want to get a post up tonight or tomorrow, or really both days, but I have events and meetings both nights so we'll see.)
