New Spring Part 3

Welcome to the third and final part of the New Spring Commentary. For The Eye of The World, I will see if I can pick up the frequency of posts, but that means they will probably cover fewer chapters. The main books tend to have much longer chapters, at any rate. Remember that there will be spoilers for the entire series, up to and including The Gathering Storm. Now, with that said, let us begin.

Chapter 17: An Arrival

Summary: Moiraine is frustrated after three months of searching. She is consoling Jurine Najima, a woman who has just lost her husband and male children in a supposed accidental fire. Moiraine also thinks of the fighting over the Sun Throne in Cairhien. Jurine mentions that Josef, her husband, as always considered very lucky. Moiraine is impatient to go, but relieved that their small child was born in the wrong place to be the one she searches for. She goes out into the streets of Canluum and notices two Aes Sedai on her way to The Gates of Heaven, her inn. There are five sisters staying at the inn, much to Moiraine's dismay. They think she is a wilder, just as there is a true wilder at the in, a Mistress Asher.

As she is making her way up the steps to her room, she is confronted by Larelle Tarsi, who has taught Moiraine before, and Merean. Felaana, a Red, who was the first to confront Moiraine, deflects them. She also mentions how the rules for novice ages have been bent a time or two. Before they can get much further in discussion, Cadsuane Melaidhrin appears at the top of the stairs and orders Merean and Larelle to "Bring the girl" while leading them to a private sitting room. The two Aes Sedai sit while Moiraine is told to stand, and Cadsuane circles around the three. Moiraine is angry at being ordered around, but tries to suppress her anger. Cadsuane asks what she is doing out here and in disguise and Moiraine implies she is searching for a Warder. Cadsuane asks the two sitting sisters about Moiraine and they mention she is a quick learner, but has a fondness for pranks. Merean mentions that Siuan and Moiraine were caught trying to sneak mice into Elaida's bed and were punished for it.

Moiraine bursts out that she needs to pack for her trip to Chachin. Cadsuane tells her to pour them wine and that Moiraine will leave when Cadsuane says she can. Cadsuane mentions she may not have long to live, stunning the three other sisters. She mentions that Meilyn is older than her. Then Kerene is the strongest after Cadsuane and Meilyn. Larelle flinched at the mention of Kerene. The next five strongest will be Siuan and Moiraine when they reach their potential, plus three others, one of which is in retirement. Cadsuane mentions how the Tower dwindles, which interests Moiraine. Then she orders Larelle and Merean to escort Moiraine to Chachin, for her protection. The two Aes Sedai reluctantly agree to watch Moiraine and leave. Moiraine angrily says she "agreed to nothing" and Cadsuane says she will check her bed to make sure Moiraine hasn't left. She also threatens to make Moiraine "weep as you did for those mice" if she doesn't comply. Moiraine is left wondering what she can do now and if Cadsuane is one of Tamra's searchers.

I didn't mention all the rumors about what Cadsuane is said to have done over her long life, but those may be of interest. Moiraine has been on the hunt for three months and she mentions she has crossed off about nine names in her book with hundreds left. It is nice to see she is realizing just what a task it is she has taken on. It eventually ends up taking her almost 20 years to find the boy she is looking for. In other news, she really needs to learn to hold her tongue. The mention of sisters and strength will be important in a chapter or two. Cadsuane gives her some good advice at the end of the chapter, but I don't believe Moiraine follows it very well.

Chapter 18: A Narrow Passage

Summary: Moiraine exits the sitting room into the common room, wishing that Siuan were around to get her out of this mess. Then she notices a young woman peek into the common room twice. It is Siuan and she motions for Moiraine to meet with her outside. As she follows Siuan, Moiraine worries about what it means that her friend is here. She catches up to Siuan in an alley. Siaun is agitated and hopes that Moiraine has found the boy. Siuan starts weeping and mentions that Tamra's searchers are all dead, apparently in accidents. Siuan and Moiraine sit while she explains that she hid under Meilyn's bed to warn her, only she fell asleep and woke up in the morning, finding that nobody had slept in the bed. At breakfast, Chesmal Emry announces that Meilyn had died in her bed in the night. Putting together this death, apparently caused by the Power, with Tamra's and the others, they deduce that it was the Black Ajah. Moiraine tells her about Cadsuane and Siuan remarks that she could be Black, or any of the other sisters. They can trust only themselves.

Moiraine has Siuan go ahead and start for Chachin, giving her half the money she has. As Siuan goes, Moiraine wishes she were Green and had several Warders guarding her back. She thinks anyone she meets could be a Darkfriend and heads back for her inn. She sees a sister talking with a tall man in the doorway of the inn and is suspicious. Moiraine enters the inn, but can't see who the sister was. She is met by the innkeeper, who informs her she must share he room now that there are three more Aes Sedai at the inn. She is treated differently by the innkeeper and her new roommate as they apparently believe she will become a novice soon. In the common room, during supper, Moiraine hears all about what people think novice life is like and she tries to escape by going to bed early. Mistress Palan follows her soon afterwards and won't stop talking until she fell asleep. Cadsuane makes her visit in the morning, and Moiraine is so stressed out that she embraces the Source and holds her limit of the power. Cadsuane leaves and Moiraine waits a bit before packing what she can and leaving the room. She reluctantly leaves behind many of her things.

Welcome Siuan! Lots of bad news all in one go. Not only have some of the strongest sisters just been killed off, but the existence of the Black Ajah is confirmed (for them at least) and they are alone in their search for the boy. Chesmal gets a mention here, and of course she'll be important later. She is likely the one to have done some of the recent killing, we know she was involved with Meilyn and Tamra at least. So, Black Ajah has killed off some of the stronger Aes Sedai and dealt a major blow to the Light. We'll also learn what else they are up to by the end of the story. For the record, I don't think Cadsuane is Black, but she certainly does whatever it is she wants to do to further her own agenda.

Chapter 19: Pond Water

Summary: Moiraine leaves the inn through the empty common room and heads for the stables. As the groom saddles Arrow, she wonders if Cadsuane has paid the servants to keep track of her movements. She regrets the necessity of leaving her packhorse behind, but heads off towards the gate hoping her ruse holds. She is surprised to see she isn't the first person at the gates waiting to leave. Three men are ahead of her, and one is the man she saw at The Gates of Heaven. When the gates open, Moiraine allows a few merchant's wagons to go between her and the men, but keeps the men in sight since they are going the same way. They set a hard pace and she follows, stopping briefly to get some food and inquire about one of the women on her list. She catches up to the men again and tries to decide the best way to approach them. It is getting late and the men stop in the road briefly before two of them ride off and the other, Lan, heads off of the road to make camp. Moiraine decides to follow him, as one man will be easier to handle than three.

She finds a trail that even a child could follow, which leads to Lan sitting near a lake. Moiraine decides to catch Lan by surprise, but is surprised herself when he turns quickly and throws her into the lake. He pulls her out of the lake, easily resisting her effort to pull him in. He then offers to put up blankets and a fire for her to dry. Ryne wants a peek at Moiraine naked, but Lan draws his sword to bar his way. Things look tense until Bukama has them play a game called "sevens" where they sit across from each other and draw swords.

Moiraine asks to be escorted to Chachin, and gives the men coins, unaware that she has insulted them. She is unable to get any information from them and they go to sleep for the night, with one man always on watch. She uses flows of Spirit to keep track of the men's movements. In the middle of the night, she hears a comment that angers her and creates a cyclone which drenches Lan and gets the others wet. They think it is Shadowspawn, but she tells them it was her and that they should hold respect for Aes Sedai. They get settled again and go back to sleep, while Moiraine uses her Spirit wards again. She has trouble getting to sleep and thinks about the men.

I love all of the misunderstandings in these scenes, which become more apparent when we get some Lan viewpoints. Moiraine thinks she knows so much, yet her ability to read this men isn't very good. For instance, she doesn't understand why Lan won't look her in the eyes, although to be fair, many don't seem to understand Malkieri custom in the Borderlands. She also needs to work on her anger problems, and perhaps not walking into such an obvious set-up next time. The cyclone... well, she expected to humble Lan with that and is surprised when he is on his feet and has his sword ready. This is where he catches her attention, although her last thoughts in this chapter are about Ryne.

Chapter 20: Breakfast in Manala

Summary: Moiraine wants the men to call her "Lady Alys" when she wakes up. Lan thinks that she was awake every time he went on guard duty. Lan doesn't believe that Moiraine is Aes Sedai since he saw childish glee on her face when she did the water thing and disappointment when it failed to faze him. Lan also thinks Moiraine may have been sent by Edeyn to watch him and Bukama is angry that Lan won't give his oath to protect her as the old man has. Ryne is flirting with Moiraine, and Lan understands, as she is beautiful. He wants nothing to do with an Aes Sedai or a Cairhien. They reach the village of Manala and Moiraine calls a halt. Lan thinks they could have eaten and slept here last night if not for Moiraine.

In Manala, Bel Tine festivities are going on, with dancing around the Spring Pole when they arrive. Everyone is dressed in their best clothes and more people are coming into down from the surrounding area. There are also six stakes with Trolloc heads on them, and Lan notes that everyone has weapons nearby even as they celebrate. "Lady Alys" is unfazed by the sight of the Trollocs and lets slip that she has faced them before. She has Ryne choose them an inn, The Plowman's Blade, where they eat breakfast. The men are discussing her and whether or not they should ask questions about when she wants when they realize that she is gone. Lan and Ryne go out to find her while Bukama stays in the inn. They split up, and Lan doesn't want Moiraine to meet anyone behind his back, worrying about assassins.

Lan finds Moiraine talking to a woman and eavesdrops on them. Moiraine confronts him about it when the woman leaves and Lan is surprised that she was able to hear him. Moiraine tells Lan to forget the name Avene Sahera and mind his own business. Lan goes back to Bukama and tells him about what he learned. Bukama suggests she only wanted their protection until she finds this woman, but Lan points out that this doesn't explain why she followed them for a whole day.

Nice to see Moiraine hasn't changed her alias in all these years. Ryne is acting odd, but we'll learn why that is later on. I love how she could have reached the town that night if she hadn't followed Lan into the trees. Moiraine doesn't even know she is insulting the men half the time, which I find funny. The Trollocs she faced before were in her testing of course. I also skipped a bit about how the inns in the Borderlands tend to be fortified and used as a rallying place during Trolloc raids. Lan continues to doubt Moiraine because she is acting very un-Aes Sedai-like in his opinion, although a few times he almost believes. Still, he believes she is a dangerous woman.

Chapter 21: Some Tricks of the Power

They ride hard on the journey to Chachin, with "Alys" continuing to search for the Sahera woman. She also asks questions of the men, trying to learn about their past, which they deflect. Bukama continues to harp about Lan not offering his pledge. She uses the Power to protect them from two powerful storms out of the Blight. They also see bandits from afar several times. On the fourth day, they are suddenly surrounded by dozens of men. The leader of the bandits wants them to surrender so they can have loot their coin and the lady's jewelry. Lan knows the men would be killed if they surrender. Moiraine used the Power to threaten them with a loud demand and fire above their heads to punctuate it. The leader won't back down, but Lan issues an ultimatum and the bandits begin to scatter to his count.

Moiraine is angry that they let the bandits get away, arguing that if they had attacked, she could have used the Power on them. Lan is plagued by Moiraine. On the first night after the water, she keeps him awake with switches of air. Then she got sand all over this things the next night. The night after the bandits she got ants to bite him. The next night it was blisterleaf. Lan doesn't mentions these incidents to the others. He can't figure out what type of reaction Moiraine wants from him, but thinks she will slowly kill him.

Moiraine can't understand Lan's stubbornness. She wants an apology from Lan and for him to regard her properly as Aes Sedai. The trick with the ants had been a Blue Ajah secret. She continues to plan how to make him yield, but wonders why the men don't say anything. She also thinks the men don't talk much about themselves. She continues to use the Spirit wards. Two days from Chachin, she finds the Sahera woman in Ravinda, a thriving village. Mistress Sahera is using the bounty to build a large inn and plans to call it the White Tower. Unfortunately her child was born at the wrong time and place. Moiraine is not pleased with the Accepted who took down her information.

She is thinking of plans for that night, deciding to use wasps if Lan isn't allergic. She asks him and he turns, then grunts. There is an arrow sticking out of his shoulder. She uses the Power to weave a shield around Lan and then herself. Then Moiraine finds the archer and uses Air to hold him. Ryne and Bukama each put an arrow in the man and she releases the flows holding him, dismayed that they've killed him with her help. The man dies, revealing that "he" hired him to kill her first, but he went for Lan who he thought was the bigger threat. Moiraine wishes she could heal him to get some answers and begins going through the stuff on his person. They get the arrow out of Lan and Moiraine offers healing, which he reluctantly accepts. Moiraine regrets not having searched the assassin's saddlebags before Lan let the horse go, but is surprised by the touch of kindness Lan shows the horse, so decides not to use the wasps that night.

Hard to summarize a summary of their travels. Moiraine still fond of pulling pranks, although by the end of the chapter she is ready to give Lan a reprieve, for the night. She does pretty well in the first ambush with the assassins, and Lan wonders why she thinks she can take on fifty men herself. She still has the restrictions of the Three Oaths though, so I think Lan's handling of the situation was best. The assassin situation was lucky for them, although I don't believe we ever learn who sent the assassin. Moiraine remarks that her death cost the same as a silk dress in Tar Valon. The assassin should have listened to the man who hired him. Incidentally, the assassin was Caniedrin, a soldier under Lan's command during the Aiel War. He did it for the money.

Chapter 22: Keeping Custom

Summary: Lan wants to be rid of Alys as soon as they get to the heavily fortified city of Chachin. He gives some advice and rudely rides away towards the Aesdaishar Palace, where Edeyn will be if she is in the city. The three men slowly make their way to the palace and Lan tries to banish thoughts of Lady Alys and focus on the reason he is here: Edeyn. Guards hold him at the gate of the Visitor's Yard and Lan says his name. An officer who campaigned with him in the south recognizes him and greets him warmly. Lan does not like his greeting, thinking that he is "swimming in a sea of other people's expectations" and that he could drowned. Bukama and Ryne are shown simple rooms and Lan is pleased that his three rooms are suitable for his station, rather than the rooms of a visiting king.

Lan talks with his two serving women while they unpack his clothes, learning that Lady Edeyn Arrel is in residence. Many of his clothes show hard wear, but he is able to dress fairly well for the confrontation to come. "He had small experience in the kind of battle he needed to fight now." He sent the serving women to guard the door and assumed the ko'di, waiting for his chance to make a public meeting with Edeyn; she had all the advantage in private as his carneira. Edeyn sends two demands that he meet her in private, which he refuses. Lan is relieved when Mistress Romera arrives to take him to see the Prince Consort. In the large formal hall, many men and women who had decided to now remember Malkier watch Lan as he is presented. Brys welcomes him and mentions that his luck must have rubbed off on his son, Diryk, who fell fifty feet onto paving stones and survived with merely bruises.

The boy asks him many questions, some of which Lan has time to answer, before his father sends him back to his studies. Brys escorts Lan over to Lady Edeyn, who firmly announces that she swears fealty to Lan, King of Malkier. He whispers that there is no King of Malkier, to which she replies that a majority of the Great Lords are present, should they ask to see how they will cast the rods? A crowd forms around him, wishing to swear fealty, but Prince Brys takes Lan to his private balcony and apologizes for the incident. They talk about various other things on the walk and eventually Lan goes back to his apartments. Edeyn is in his sitting room and orders him to bring her his daori. It is his hair woven in a cord, a token of what Lan owes his carneira. She suggests that he marry her daughters, Iselle, which scandalizes Lan, but he can think of no way to avoid it.

Malkieri customs are somewhat strange, although from this chapter and previous ones, we get some basic ideas about them. Women choose their first lover and hold power over them. Edeyn says she can marry him off, as his carneira, since he has no living female relatives. Lan pretty much assumes he will have to lead men into the Blight now, and that he will be married to Iselle. Perhaps the most interesting thing here is how differently this contrasts with his actual marriage much later on and the gathering of an army to at least follow him into the Blight. We haven't seen how he reacts to that yet, but it will be interesting to compare that to this. The private walk Brys leads him to and the conversation about luck are important, as we shall see very soon.

Chapter 23: The Evening Star

Summary: Moiraine is pleased at the impression she left on Lan, but further impressions will have to wait while she searches for Siuan in the rougher districts. She rides to the poorer section of the city and begins checking inns. At the first stop, a woman tries to steal her horse, which Moiraine has set a ward on to alert her if anyone tried to move the horse, and furthermore, hobbled the horse with flows of air. She has a quick confrontation with the horse-thief before moving on to the next inn. She has no luck at the other inns on the street either, until she gets to the last one. The innkeeper greets her and says she has a woman of that description staying there. Moiraine is suspicious when the woman hands her a mug of wine, which none of the other inns could afford. She uses one of the Blue's secret weaves, which induces fear. She interrogates the innkeeper, learning that the woman would drug unsuspecting female patrons and then sell them. Moiraine makes her drink the wine. When the woman falls down, drugged, Moiraine leaves with some of the other patrons, thinking that "sometimes justice came from other than laws or swords."

She continues her search, looking in various rough areas of Chachin. At the inns, she is unable to find Siuan, but was offered wine under strange circumstances several more times. She reluctantly does not repeat her previous performance for fear that other Blues would learn of it. She does use the secret weave to fend off two attempts be armed men to pull her from Arrow and steal the horse. Seven times, people tried to steal Arrow while she was inside inns. As it began to get dark, Siuan found her and warns her that these aren't the quarters for her. Siuan takes her to a perfectly respectable inn, The Evening Star. Moiraine is surprised that she would stay in a place that cost this much, but they quickly get down to business. Ines Demain, the woman on their list, had a boy child and "named him Rahien because she saw the dawn come up over Dragonmount." The only problem is that the woman is in the Aesdaishar Palace.

Moiraine says they will have to deal with that in the morning and asks if Siuan has learned anything about the Black Ajah. Siuan mentions strange gossip going around the city. Specifically how a young blacksmith was killed recently. The man became a speaker, getting his guild to raise money for the poor. He was carrying some money back to his guild house when somebody killed him by breaking his back. Not a coin of the money he carried was taken. Moiraine can't see how that is connected to the Black Ajah, but Siuan thinks there might be something important to the story. They focus back on what that will do to get into the Palace and Moiraine must spend half the night getting Siuan to agree to the plan.

Lots of Moiraine taking care of herself here, although her whole assumption that her friend would be in these rougher places, based upon prior experience, is completely wrong. One would think a story about a woman in silks, riding around the rougher quarters of the city and avoiding all sorts of mischief would circulate, even after just a day of it. Moiraine still seems to think she is invincible, when she clearly isn't. Still, she does okay for herself on her little adventure through the slums. Nice to see Siuan again, now with heightened intelligence gathering skills. She is correct about the blacksmith. Something is definitely going on there, but we don't get the whole picture until later. Nice hook at the end of this chapter, lets go see what Moiraine has in mind.

Chapter 24: Making Use of Invisibility

Summary: In the morning, Siuan goes back to arguing about the plan, complaining that Moiraine is taking all the risks. When they are dressed, the two head for the common room, where Siuan wants to eat a big breakfast, but Moiraine insists they grab rolls to eat on the way. Moiraine hires two of the inkeeper's men to escort herself and Siuan to a bank. They arrive at the bank, which looks like a small palace, and get an interview with the banker herself. She uses one of her letter-of-rights to get ten purses filled with gold. They head back to the inn with their guards and deposit most of the coins in the inn's strongroom. They inquire about the best seamstress in the city, who turns out to be Silene Dorelmin. Moiraine breaks most of the rules of propriety between a woman and her seamstress, picking out fabrics and colors quickly and mentioning price. The woman balks at her demand to have the dresses tomorrow, so she dumps out thirty gold coins and tells the seamstress as much again when the dresses are ready. Moiraine also says she will take away six coins from the second thirty for each day it takes.

Two days after Moiraine arrived in Chachin, a yellow carriage pulled by a team of four grays arrived at the Aesdaishar Palace. The Lady Moiraine Damodred was received by a high raking servant and shown to suitable apartments. She also had two maids and an errand boy assigned to her. They paid no attention to her maid, Suki, as they unpacked her things. Moiraine tells Siuan she should make use of her invisibility to find out about the Lady Ines. They want to be gone by tomorrow, if possible, since Gorthanes will surely learn of her visit and the palace would be a good place for an assassination. Siuan learns that the Lady Ines is in seclusion for a month, as her elder husband recently died. Moiraine is summoned to see Lord Brys and Siuan mentions that she may have a way into the Lady Ines' apartments.

And now we know what we had that whole seamstress scene in Tar Valon. Although, I must admit that I did find the first scene fairly interesting at the time. Kudos to Robert Jordan there. He makes these things so believable within the Wheel of Time world. Also, Siuan as Suki the Lady's maid is pretty funny, especially since she doesn't seem to know the first thing about court etiquette or the proper behavior for a maid. We get similar scenes with Elayne and Nyneave much later on, of course. The odd thing about this all is the sense of urgency Siuan and Moiraine have to get the information and get out. I can understand now that they've revealed Moiraine's location, but why did they have to rush into the palace in the first place? I guess it was the whole Black Ajah thing, but their search takes nearly two more decades and even when they find the boy, they don't really know what to do with him. What were they planning to do if Lady Ines' boy had been the Dragon Reborn? They really don't think these things out.

Chapter 25: An Answer

Summary: The shatayan is "frosty" over having been made to wait for Moiraine, but leads her along the hallways. Moiraine is wondering if Siuan will really sleep with a footman to learn what they need. Then she sees Ryne and Bukama practicing in a courtyard and thinks that she will have to avoid them and Lan, if he is here. She meets Lord Brys and gets a warm greeting, but her neck starts to ache from looking up, as everyone there is taller than her. Moiraine is having difficulty putting on a show of interest in the small talk. "She cared little for music and less for whoever played the instruments; in Cairhien, musicians were hired and forgotten." She is relieved when the children of Lord Brys are introduced, as it means the audience is at an end. Diryk mentions that "Lan is the King of Malkier," which gets Moiraine's attention. Brys explains that Lan could be King if he wished it.

Moiraine is visibly shaken at hearing that Lan is here and that she might meet him. She feigns sickness and says she will go back to her rooms and rest. On the way back, she runs into Merean. The other Aes Sedai comments on Moiraine still hiding her ring and answers Moiraine's blurted question of whether or not she was alone with: "Larelle decided to go her own way. South, I believe. More, I don't know." Moiraine says she meant Cadsuane, and Merean says she will not relish her next meeting with the Green, who was rather unhappy that Moiraine ran. Moiraine thinks that Cadsuane might be Black, and realizes that members of the Black Ajah can lie. Merean says they will talk later, before heading off.

Thinking about Larelle, Moiraine wonders if the woman ended up dead like Tamra and the others or if she is Black. The servant blurts out that Moiraine is Aes Sedai too, and promises not to tell anyone. Moiraine orders her to take her to Lan's apartments. As they walk, Moiraine puts on her Great Serpent ring. Moiraine is announced at the door to his apartments, but refused entrance. She forces her way into the room anyways. She finds Lan practicing the forms in the middle of the room and he stops to say he has no time for her games and that he is waiting for somebody. Moiraine says his "lady love" need not fear, since she isn't interested in Lan.

Instead, Moiraine asks for Lan's help, citing an ancient pledge between the Tower and Malkier. Lan says he will help if she can answer a question he has. She moves a chair to the middle of the room with the power and sits, trying to get advantage. Unfazed, Lan asks why the Tower didn't come to Malkier's aid when the Trollocs came flooding in and Malkier died. Moiraine hesitates, as the information is forbidden for outsiders, but goes ahead and reveals what she knows anyway. The Tower sent over a hundred Aes Sedai to aid Malkier, but the arrived too late. She also told him she regretted that the Tower chose to keep it secret.

Moiraine asks him to have somebody watch Merean Redhill and report on her movements and actions. Lan says he has stayed to his room of late, but Moiraine suggests he have a Malkieri, somebody he can trust, do it. He says he will have Ryne and Bukama do it, but Moiraine says only Bukama, and to not reveal why. He agrees and she heads back to her apartments to find Siuan entertaining a young woman. The Lady Iselle wishes to go to the White Tower, but her mother wants her to marry. She is unwilling to marry Lan, saying she will marry one of her Warders, as a Green, if she does marry. Moiraine tells her to go if she wants to, that she doesn't have time to coddle the young woman. She gets Lady Iselle out of the room and Siuan and herself think that Iselle would never make it.

Siuan tells Moiraine that she learned that Cal, the footman, was a good kisser, but not much else. Moiraine looks at her oddly, but Siuan retorts that it has been a while since she kissed a pretty young man. Moiraine shifts the topic and Siuan is distraught that she went to see Lan, more so than learning Merean was had arrived. Moiraine mentions that they have to risk something to gain something and Siuan goes out to learn what she can. When she returns, she says Bukama approached her and told her that Merean was with Brys most of the day. She also learned that Rahien was born within the ten day period after Gitara died, the day after she died, in fact. Siuan packs her things, revealing that she was invited to sleep with the Lady Ines' servants, having implied that she was fired by Moiraine. Siuan mentions that "one of these days, you're going to find yourself ready to do more than dream about some man, and I hope I'm there to see it!" Moiraine puts the thought of men out of her mind and wonders what Merean is up to, worrying that they are missing something.

I had to point out Moiraine's thought about musicians, because, well, it is highly amusing when taken with what we learn later about her and Thom. Hopefully we get some sort of reunion of those two, in the next book perhaps? Also, that quote of Siuan's seemed appropriate. Hey, if Siuan can get married, so can Moiraine. (Although, I don't think they got married yet, just an agreement to get married. Can't remember for sure.) So yes, we have Merean showing up here without Larelle. The consensus is that Larelle was killed at some time, since she was so eager to go to Chachin, yet never showed up as far as we know. More on that later. Moiraine spilled the beans about Malkier and we have the watching of Merean. Lots of set up for the end of the book. Way to ratchet up the tension, is this the boy? Go have some fun Siuan!

Chapter 26: When to Surrender

Summary: Lan slips through the corridors of the Aesdaishar Palace, wrapped in the ko'di and avoiding everyone. His serving women take orders from Edeyn, and he can't be sure that any servants he sees don't take orders from her as well. Edeyn mentioned she would announce his marriage to her daughter soon, and the only thing keeping him in the Palace was Bukama and a dream. He hides behind a statue as Merean and Iselle come out of a corridor ahead of him. Merean sends Iselle away, then follows after her. Lan pays little attention to her behavior and hurries on to talk to Bukama. If he ran, many dreams would end.

Turing to head down a set of stone steps, Lan was suddenly falling. He went limp, falling to the bottom of the stairs. Servants appeared to help him up and he thinks that something had jerked his ankles at the top of the stairs. An Aes Sedai had tried to kill him! A palace guard comes to tell him that Bukama is hurt. Lan runs after the guard, but he is too late. Bukama has been stabbed in the back and is dead. He wonders how anyone could have gotten close enough to Bukama to kill him like this. Lan thinks this is what happens when you get enmeshed in Aes Sedai schemes and starts running.

Moiraine hears a crash and gets up from her armchair. Lan bursts into the room as she embraces Saidar, and he closes the door behind him. He tells her that Bukama is dead and that somebody tried to kill him with the Power. He doesn't think Merean saw him, but Moiraine says he would be surprised what sisters can notice. She says that maybe she shouldn't have had Bukama watch Merean. She is dangerous. He mentions that Iselle was going somewhere with Brys and Diryk and wants to know what she got him into. Moiraine puzzles out a pattern and asks Lan where Brys would go to be alone. He tells her of the walk and wants to alert the guards.

She says no, that Brys will not be happy if Merean is merely talking to him, and if she isn't the guards won't be able to help anyway. Moiraine tells him to take her to the walk and to hurry. They run through the corridors, attracting strange looks. She let the Power fill her to capacity as she ran, trying to decide how she would handle things. They find Merean using the power to hold Brys and Diryk, and Iselle is there too. Ryne is also there and Moiraine sees this as proof that he is a Darkfriend. Moiraine tries to shield Merean, but her attempt fails.

Merean shows no surprise at the attack, binding and gagging Iselle before ordering Ryne to kill Lan as he killed Bukama. Lan and Ryne begin to fight as Merean tries to shield Moiraine. Moiraine desperately defends herself, stopping it just in time, but she is unable to successfully free the captives as Merean meets her every attempt. Merean wishes to know why she keeps showing up so often ans starts using dangerous weaves. Moiraine fights for her life while trying to free the captives, but she can barely defend herself. Merean is too strong and has too much experience with the Power. Lan and Ryne are still fighting, but it appears Ryne is the better swordsman.

Merean is impatient for the fight to end so she lifts Diryk over the rail and drops him. Moiraine tries to catch the boy with flows if Air, but Merean stops her and shields her while she is distracted. Moiraine is groggy from the shielding, and unable to stand. Merean thinks Moiraine will keep while she kills the others. The Black lifts Brys and drops him while Moiraine staggers to her feet. Iselle is lifted next and Moiraine thinks this must end. The Blue drove her belt knife into Merean's back and they fell. Moiraine is free of her the shield and Iselle falls onto the stone railing. She scrambles over the dead woman's body to grab Iselle. She can barely hold onto the girl, let alone pull her back over the rail. Iselle's hand slips in her grip and Moiraine tries desperately to embrace the Source. The young woman's hand slips out of her bloody fingers and Moiraine can only watch as she falls.

Lan pulls her away from the railing, saying that she should "never watch a death you don't have to." Moiraine walks over to Merean's body, retrieving her belt knife and cleaning it on Merean's skirts. She holds onto an outward show of serenity, as she did during the test. She mentions that Lan was better than Ryne, but Lan says that Ryne was better, but thought Lan was finished with only one arm. "He never understood. You surrender after you're dead." Eventually Moiraine is able to embrace the Source and Heal Lan's injuries. With Lan weak from healing, he won't be able to go anywhere very quickly. She uses the Power to destroy Merean's body. She asks Lan if he will be silent about what happened here. He says she is a "very hard woman." Moiraine thinks of all the other things she must deal with, such as Ryne's body and the blood and that she will be as hard as she must.

You really must read that chapter for yourself. It is very hard to summarize all of that action. So. Merean is Black. A common theory is that she killed Larelle herself, which wouldn't surprise me. This does make one wonder if the Mistress of Novices is often Black as well. Merean. Sheriam. Both "Blues." I don't know, the Mistress of Novices position would be handy for the Black Ajah to keep an eye on potential recruits, and it is a position of some power. The Epilogue goes into a bit of detail about what Merean and the Blacks are up to, so I'll wait for a discussion of that. This battle between Moiraine and Merean is similar to some we've seen before. Very experienced/powerful Channelers don't seem to expect a physical attack once they believe they have the upper hand. Good for our heroes, generally bad for them. I feel like Moiraine does a whole lot of growing up during this fight. The stakes are very high now, very real for her, and she will do what she must to do what she feels is right.

Epilogue

Summary: The Aesdaishar Palace is in mourning. Moiraine returns from destroying Merean's belongings and runs into Edyen Arrel, who rumors say plans to retire from the world after the death of her daughter. Siuan greets her as she enters her rooms and tells her that Rahien was born in the wrong place. Moiraine sits and explains what happened, saying that Merean will never harm anyone ever again. Moiraine explains to Siuan about the luck, mentioning Lan, Diryk, maybe even the blacksmith and Josef Najima. Siuan paces around the room before exclaiming that the Black Ajah knows that the Dragon has been reborn, but not when. They are killing any men or boys they think might be able to channel. They would kill thousands. Moiraine agrees that it make sense and says they have some time, as an infant will not show signs.

Moiraine thinks Cadsuane might be Black, that any sister might be Black. Siuan says they can be on their way to Arafel, but Moiraine tells her to return to the Tower. By working under Cetalia Delarme, Siuan can look for signs of what they seek and the Black Ajah as well. Siuan grumbles about it but begins packing. She mentions that Lan rode out early and Moiraine heads for the door, saying she has unfinished business with him. Moiraine has Arrow saddled quickly and rides quickly through the city. She slows to ask where Lan may have gone outside the city and eventually finds him. Lan says he is buring his past and that he goes to face his death. Moiraine calls him a fool for wanting to die "before he must", and wants him for her Warder. He says he has his own war to fight, but Moiraine says it is the same war and tells him everything. He suddenly gives his oath, and Moiraine uses the Warder bond on him to finish the bonding. Lan can sense what she is thinking and tells her to say a prayer for her dead and ride on. The head south, away from the Blight, to back to Chachin, and then "the world, if need be."

So there you have it. The Black Ajah is searching for the same thing and apparently killing as many "lucky" men as they can find. This actually leads to one of the Black Ajah Heads getting killed, as I recall. Ishamael was not happy about that, not at all. Anyway, our heroes and the Black are searching for the same thing. We don't really know what happens between the end of this book and the beginning of The Eye of the World, but I suspect many adventures, possibly some run-ins with the Black Ajah, and lots of dead ends. I do wonder what happened to Siuan when she got back to the Tower. It probably wasn't very pleasant at all.

Strictly speaking, none of New Spring is necessary for understanding what happens in the main series, but we do get lots of hints about several of the characters and our only look (to date) at the test to become Aes Sedai. I think it is a good primer for what is to come, but my personal opinion is that is should be read after one reads the main series for the first time. I think this will be the third or fourth re-read in which I start with New Spring. And speaking of the re-read, I will see about posting commentary for the first book very soon. Life is just making that very difficult at the moment, and obviously I won't get the commentary done by the end of January. My goal would ideally be several chapters a day, every day, but that is unlikely to happen right now. Rest assured, I'll have The Eye of the World finished by the end of this month. Commentary takes longer because I skim the chapter again for the summary and then pick some interesting things to comment on. I have been feeling a bit rushed on the commentary, just trying to say a few things before getting on to the next summary. I'll think about it.

Stay Awesome and happy reading!

New Spring Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of New Spring, part of the Wheel of Time Commentary. This section covers the middle third of the book and as always will contain spoilers for the entire series, up to and including The Gathering Storm. With that said, let us begin!

Chapter 8: Shreds of Serenity

Summary: Moiraine and Siuan continue their clerical duties, attracting the ire of Aes Sedai who now have to teach novice classes. They continue private lessons from those Aes Sedai who don't refuse to give them. Moiraine takes lessons from Kerene, Meilyn and Aisha on history, philosophy and law, respectively. The two Accepted wonder why none of the searchers have left the Tower yet. Rumor has it that Gitara has had other Foretellings, specifically that "Tarmon Gai'don will come during the lifetimes of sisters now breathing." Moiraine and Siuan continue to practice for the test and Elaida barges into one of their practice sessions and takes over. Elaida uses lights and sounds to confuse Moiraine in addition to blows. Moiraine is unable to get very far in the 100 weaves required to pass the test. On the fifth attempt, Moiraine falls to her knees weeping. Elaida says the pain will teach her a lesson, she must be able to weave faster. Next she tries Siuan, who does much better than Moiraine, before Elaida calls quits for the night. She comments that Siuan would fail because "there isn't a shred of serenity in you." Siuan holds back her tears until Elaida leaves.

Elaida comes in the morning to use healing on them. That night she gives them more lessons and on the next night as well. Merean wakes them on the morning after the third night and offers them healing, informing them that they need not worry about Elaida anymore. She informs them that Elaida nearly earned a penance for helping them cheat on the test for the shawl. They run into Elaida a few days later, she says nothing but is clearly angry. A week after Gitara's Foretelling, the weather clears and the snows on the lower slopes of Dragonmount melt, giving them a ten day window for the birth of the Dragon Reborn. Soon after, the number of names added to their books each day reaches zero. At dawn, nine days after the thaw, Moiraine is summoned for her testing.

I think the most interesting part of this chapter is Elaida and her actions. I don't think we ever really learn why she wanted to "help" these girls pass the test. It may have had something to do with the fact that their potential in the Power would reach her own. It may also have something to do with them matching her in terms of time spent as novices and likely their time as Accepted being even shorter than hers. Which I believe is about the case, when they pass on the day that begins at the close of this chapter. In terms of hierarchy then, Siuan and Moiraine will surpass Elaida one day. Still not sure on her motivations though. Another possibility could be that she had had a Foretelling or two regarding this pair. We'll probably never know. Her anger at the humiliation she suffers when her "aid" has been discovered does bring in a new dimension to her role in the fall of Siuan as Amyrlin. The other big thing, thrown in at the end, is that we now have a window for the birth of the Dragon Reborn.

Chapter 9: It Begins

Summary: Merean leads Moiraine down through the tower, taking her below the storerooms in the upper levels of the Tower basements and down to corridors rarely used by anyone except for testing. Moiraine worries about what will happen if she fails, but decides that since she still has the names, she will continue the search regardless. Her anxiety diminishes somewhat at the that thought. They enter a large domed chamber and Moiraine sees the great oval ring ter'angreal which will be used for the test. An Aes Sedai from each Ajah is in attendance to help administer the test, Elaida is one of them. Merean begins the ceremony, which includes Moiraine disrobing as she must perform the test "clad in the Light." She remembers the little book in her belt pouch and nearly panics, but tries to remain calm and puts her clothes on top of the pouch. She is told to follow a six-pointed star, which will guide her through the test. The Aes Sedai administering the test knell around the ter'angreal and begin to weave. The colors shifting over the surface of the oval move faster until the air in the middle of the ring turns white. Then the ring starts to revolve around its base, making no noise as it does so. Moiraine enters the ring calmly.

She can't remember where she is or how she got there. Also, she wonders why she isn't wearing any clothes. A table and dress seem to appear suddenly in the hallway in which she finds herself. She finds a full set of garments on the table and puts them on. She finds it easier to maintain serenity with a dress on and remembers she is the Lady Moiraine Damodred and that few can order her around inside Cairhien. She exits the hallway and finds a courtyard, pausing to find a brass six-pointed star inlaid in the center of the courtyard, before walking towards it. As she walks, her clothing suddenly disappears, one piece at a time. Three unshaven men stroll into the courtyard and begin ogling her. She tries to maintain her calm while walking toward the star. Once there, she used the required weave to make a wall of air around the men, who have been following her. She finds and passes through an archway with the same star symbol at the top.

She is suddenly naked in a doorless corridor. She finds rough woolen clothing to put on before walking to a doorway at the far end of the hall. Through the doorway she finds an abandoned village, apparently due to drought. The heat starts her sweating before she has gone very far. She finds a chipped painting of a star on a tile next to the well and steps onto it to begin her weave. As she begins, she is suddenly ensnared in blackclaw bushes. The thorns bite into her skin as she tries to get out, calmly. She continues to weave, but finds death's-head spiders from the Aiel Waste infesting the branches holding her. She divides her flows and begins killing spiders, weaving faster until the weave she must finish completes and the branches disappear. She resists the urge to look for spiders that may have gotten on her and instead finds the archway to walk through.

She is in some sort of room, with no idea why she is dressed like a farmer or why she appears to have been rolling around in thorn bushes. She finds a light patch in the darkness and walks for a while before discovering that the light is a doorway. She walks through and discovers a square surrounded by a high stone wall. As she walks to the star set in the center of the square, Trollocs begin to climb over the wall. She starts weaving once she reaches the star, as more and more Trollocs pour into the square and start rushing towards her. The required weave is first, but once she has started it, she begins throwing fireballs at the Trollocs, using both hands. The required weave nearly collapses as she is distracted with defending herself. There were too many Trollocs to turn her back on them. She realizes she can use a court dance to quickly move about the rim of the star while keeping the required weave in sight. She dances, killing Trollocs as she weaves faster than she ever has. The required weave finishes, but there are still Trollocs in the square, so she continues her dance as she uses lightning and fire to kill. She sees an archway leading out to where the Trollocs had come from, out into the Blight. She steps through.

That was hard to summarize. You'll want to read the chapter for yourself, since I skipped some things. I did keep the incidents during the test more or less intact. The last weave with the Trollocs is interesting because that will come up later in the book. This is her first encounter with Trollocs and she does rather well. These tests actually seem to push Moiraine past what she thought she could do to get to what she actually can do. Combining the court dance with the fireball throwing was rather interesting, although one might wonder why she didn't put a dome of air around her or something similar. Probably so we could have this amazing fireball and lightning show. Plus she can't really remember much from the first two situations in the test. More on the test when it concludes.

Chapter 10: It Finishes

Summary: Moiraine is on her last weave. She has faced so many challenges in her test and is bone tired. She hobbles to a star next to a fountain in a garden. She maintains a smooth face despite the pain, but knows she is at the limits of her ability. She starts the last weave carefully. Her father shows up and informs her that her mother is dying. If Moiraine hurries, she will be able to see here before she goes. She finishes the weave and sees a star behind him. She walks past her father, telling him that she loves him and her mother. He tries to get her attention but she stumbles onward and finds herself back in the testing chamber. Suddenly her memories of the test come flooding back and she halts. Merean says the test is done and that Moiraine must spend the night in prayer and contemplation, as is the custom. She will don the shawl tomorrow. Merean goes to leave and Elaida joins her; the rest of the Aes Sedai come to Moiraine. Anaiya offers healing, which Moiraine accepts. Verin is present, as is Yuan, a Yellow. Moiraine deduces that the test situations are produced partly by the testing Aes Sedai and furthermore that Elaida tried to make her fail harder than the rest.

Moiraine is escorted back up to the Tower proper and heads back to the room where she and Siuan worked. She finds two clerks working and rushes back to the Accepted's quarters, learning that Siuan was taken for the test. She tells Sheriam and Myrelle that she has passed and they are suddenly distant. Their friendship cannot be renewed until they are Aes Sedai. She goes back to her room and examines the little book. It doesn't show signs of having been read by somebody carelessly, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been read. She finds food in her room, which she devours. While she waits for Siuan, she tries to read Hearts of Flame, but can't concentrate. Siuan walks in hours later to tell Moiraine that she has passed and that the two of them will be raised together. Siuan mentions she has six mice from one of the grooms and proposes that they use them in a prank. Moiraine protests that they are nearly sisters now, but Siuan convinces her that Elaida is due a good prank. Moiraine agrees, but only after Siuan eats will they attempt to place the mice.

The chapter icon is six mice, by the way. I'm not really sure who administered Siuan's test, but her words at the end of this chapter, which I didn't summarize, may indicate that Elaida wasn't part of the seven. Nothing is conclusive really. Moiraine is sure that Elaida has tried to sabotage her testing. The logical conclusion is that she is angry about near-penance and trying to take it out on Moiraine. (Or she could be continuing her whole pushing these girls to the limit thing, but I think the revenge option works better.) It does make one wonder why they let Elaida be part of the testing after she tried to help them "cheat." Perhaps they needed somebody strong in the Power and most of the other sisters, as was mentioned, were out of the tower. The prank, by the way, doesn't go so well.

Chapter 11: Just Before Dawn

Summary: Moiraine gets dressed, stifling a yawn. She spent the night in contemplation, other than the prank she and Siuan tried to pull. She places her small book into her belt pouch and was placing her jewelry box on her bed when somebody knocked on the door. She opens it to find seven Aes Sedai waiting for her. She follows them calmly to Siuan's room, where they collect Siuan and head down to the room where they were tested. Tamra is in the doorway and asks "Who comes here?" Both Moiraine and Siuan answer at the same time. They continue with the customary questions and answers. The two enter hand in hand. Tamra stands next to the oval and Aeldra holds a cushion with the Oath Rod on it. Moiraine and Siuan pass through the oval one by one, with Siuan going first. Moiraine takes the Three Oaths first.

"Under the Light and by my hope of salvation and rebirth, I vow that I will speak no word that is not true."
"Under the Light and by my hope of salvation and rebirth, I vow that I will make no weapon for one man to kill another."
"Under the Light and by my hope of salvation and rebirth, I vow that I will never use the One Power as a weapon except against Shadowspawn, or in the last extreme of defending my life or that of my Warder or another sister."
Tamra waits until Siuan has taken the Three Oaths before finishing the ceremony. Next they choose their Ajahs, to finish the ceremony. The both pick the Blue Ajah. Leane lays a blue-fringed shawl around Moiraine's shoulders and Rafela does the same for Siuan. Each of the Blues present kisses the new sisters, as the sixth, Aeldra gets a pie from each of them, as is custom. Rafela suggests they have the two walk to the Blue Ajah quarters "clad in the Light" and their shawls, as is custom. They decide not to follow this old custom. The only part of that custom still followed is that the corridors are emptied until they reach the Blue Ajah quarters. As they walk to the Ajah's quarters, they learn more about customs they won't be following. They also learn that the First Selector is the title for the head of their Ajah. They must learn many of the old customs, as some are enforced as strictly as Tower law. When the reach the Ajah's quarters, ever Blue in the Tower is there to greet them.

In this chapter we get to see the ceremony for raising a sister, which you can read in full if you'd like. I did pull out the Three Oaths, since those are always a favorite to discuss. I don't have too much to say about them right now save that the first one only applies to spoken word, so writing a lie should be possible. Also, the whole if they believe something is true they can say it thing. Possibly how Messana would avoid revealing who she is in The Gathering Storm. That is a whole other problem to discuss later. Not a whole lot else when on in this chapter besides some interesting custom stuff and also introductions to some Aes Sedai who haven't been named yet.

Chapter 12: Entering Home

Summary: They are greeted by several Blues, including Anaiya and Kairen who comment about how Aeldra stole their pies. The quarters are fairly plain, not as elaborate as some of the other Ajahs'. The floor tiles are in every shade of blue. Siuan and Moiraine get kissed thirty-nine more times each before reaching the three Sitters. Cabriana, shows them to their rooms, after Eadyth informs them she has much to tell them, so they should eat quickly. They learn that Eadyth is the First Selector, in addition to a Sitter and are told by their escort that their talents will be discovered and put to good use. Moiraine and Siuan have rooms right next to each other and their belongings have been moved into them. Moiraine thinks that it is odd that Cabriana is so deferential to them and Anaiya and Kairen, who have joined her in escorting them. They change out of their Accepted dresses and into blue ones provided by the Ajah. They decide to skip breakfast and see the First Selector first. Moiraine puts on her kesiera for the first time in six years.

They get directions to Eadyth's room from Natasia, the first Aes Sedai they found. Once in her room, they sit, waiting for her to speak. Siuan is impatient and fidgets while Moiraine tries to remain calm and wait patiently. Eadyth eventually starts speaking, revealing that the hierarchy among Aes Sedai, unless appointed by your Ajah or the Tower, is based upon strength in the One Power and time spent as novice and Accepted. Those with greater power should be show deference in degree to their power above yours. Failure to do so is a common cause for punishment for newly raised sisters. Eadyth is visibly disturbed about speaking on such a taboo topic. As they head back to their rooms, they are intercepted by an Aes Sedai they haven't seen before, a Blue named Cetalia Delarme, who has nearly as much strength in the Power as they will one day.

Cetalia tests Siuan with some papers which lay out a game of cards. Siuan has only read about it, but thinks it is the game Arrays, and that this is a winning game. Cetalia is somewhat impressed and orders Siuan to follow her for more tests of her puzzle solving skills. Moiraine goes back to her room and starts to eat her breakfast. Anaiya enters and offers her healing, saying that it can help with the tightness of the Oaths, which it does. Anaiya's main purpose was to tell her that Tamra wanted to see her. Moiraine goes off to see the Amyrlin.

Siuan is in Cetalia's rooms, which are full of books and papers. Cetalia is offering her a job, which Siuan does not want. Cetalia is in charge of the Blue's network of eyes-and-ears. She overrides Siuan's protests and tells her to go get some food. Siuan stalks away from her rooms and goes to fine Moiraine, who she thinks is as tough or tougher than herself and never gives up. She is surprised to find Moiraine slumped in a chair and learns that her friend has been tasked with distributing the bounty. Moiraine deduces that Cetalia is in charge of the eyes-and-ears and Siuan tells her not to tell anyone else. Moiraine also reveals that the Tower wants to put her on the Sun Throne and explains to Siuan why they isn't something she wants. Moiraine offers Siuan healing to deal with the tightness.

Lan is near Kinslayer's Dagger, tracking the Aiel. It looks like Pedron Niall, the Lord Captain Commander of the Children of the Light, the commander for today, will not pursue the Aiel. Lan discusses leaving with Bukama, who convinces him to tour around the southern lands for a few month before heading back to the borderlands and the Blight.

Lots of viewpoint shifting in this chapter. We learn about the hierarchy of the Aes Sedai, which has been puzzling Moiraine and Siuan for a while. At least those two are starting near the top, as they comment in this chapter. We also have the prelude to Siuan's intelligence networks, which presumably aid Moiraine in her searching and help give her a purpose in Salidar, not to mention help her find Salidar. We learn more about why Moiraine doesn't want to be Queen, which I skipped in the summary. Also, apparently Elaida caught them trying to sneak the mice into her room and dealt with them, which adds to their issues with the tightness of the Oaths. That gets hinted at in a few places in the text. I think this is the first Siuan viewpoint we get and might be the last in this book. Lan also gets a viewpoint at the end, where we learn the war is officially over and that he is going on a bit of a vacation for a bit.

Chapter 13: Business in the City

Summary: Moiraine and Siuan go down to the sisters' main dining hall for their first meal as Aes Sedai and attract some amused smiles as they are the only ones there wearing their shawls. Siuan enjoys the meal even if she complains the fish is too heavily seasoned, but Moiraine is distracted by thoughts of escape. When they return to the Blue quarters, Eadyth summons them and gives them letters-of-rights for one thousand crowns gold. They will get as much each year, and can ask for more, but the Hall may question them if they do. Siuan deposits hers with the Tower, but Moiraine has her own banker.

Moiraine hires a sedan chair to take her to her bank branch in Tar Valon. Ilain Dormaile is the banker, sister to the banker who handled her accounts in Cairhien. Mistress Dormaile congratulates her and assumes she has come to deposit her stipend. She also mentions an incident she described in a letter, which Moiraine never received. Moiraine pretends she wishes to hear the information a second time. Her banker reveals that nine days ago a Cairhienin dressed as a Tower Guard, claiming to be Ries Gorthanes, tried to get information on Moiraine's accounts. The banker realized that his orders from the Amyrlin were fake and had him detained. He bribed his way to freedom and was gone before the Guards could arrive. Moiraine thinks that one reason she banks with this banker is that she has discretion. Moiraine leaves the bank and once back at the Tower, asks after a seamstress.

Tamore Alkohima came highly recommended, so the next afternoon Moiraine and Siuan go to her shop in sedan chairs. She greets them personally when she sees their shawls. Moiraine orders twenty dresses, half with divided skirts for riding. Siuan can only be persuaded to order six. Moiraine orders so many in order to make the Tower think she means to stay in the city. They negotiate over the materials and the cut of the dresses. Moiraine is dismayed when Siuan asks for cheaper fabrics. Moiraine explains to her how she should act with the seamstress and mentions that the best hairdressers and perfumers are tyrants, to which Siuan laughs. The woolen dresses were each one gold crown and the silk ones ten each. Moiraine also orders five more riding dresses in the Cairhienin style, with fewer stripes than her rank entitled her to. These last she would have somebody pick up and were to be made last.

I must say Moiraine's thoughts on bankers are pretty interesting, especially in light of recent events. We also have Moiraine implementing part of her plan. She now has to deal with escaping the Tower so she doesn't get made a Queen as well as Cairhienin opposition to her as they struggle for the throne. Those riding dresses are a part of the plan of course. Not sure who the mysterious Carhienin fellow is, I forget if we meet him outside of New Spring. The chapter had some funny Siuan moments where she breaks convention, but you can't exactly expect her to know what the conventions are, Moiraine, when she is a fisherman's daughter. I do wonder what happened to Siuan's money in the Tower after she was overthrown. I imagine she had most of her stipends saved up over the years since she doesn't seem to enjoy spending coin. (Since she never had much as a child.)

Chapter 14: Changes

Summary: Siuan and Moiraine have much to learn of the Blue Ajah customs. Siuan seems to remember most of those Rafela mentioned, but Moiraine has to work to catch up. They learn that wearing red on clothing is forbidden in the Tower due to long standing animosity between the Blue and Red. There are also a number of complex alliances between the Ajahs. They also learn the Warder bond and some weaves not trusted to Accepted, including some weaves known only to the Blue. Moiraine also mentions her secret weave in passing and wonders if Siuan has any. They also learn the trick for ignoring the heat and cold, although Moiraine is having difficulty mastering it. The Feast of Lights comes to celebrate the new year. Moiraine gets many invitations to balls but burns them all.

Some of Moiraine's dresses came, and as she feared they were very pale blue. Siuan's came as well and emphasized her hips and bosom strongly. Moiraine notes that Siuan "cared very little about clothing." Siuan is getting frustrated with having to jump through hoops for Cetalia. Moiraine's duty requires her to sit in a room a few hours every morning signing off on work clerks did with regards to the bounty; she had hoped she would be able to visit the camps. Ellid is summoned for testing, but disappeared in the ter'angreal. Elaida has left the Tower for Andor again, which relieves both Siuan and Moiraine. They renewed their friendship with Leane and gained the friendship of Adine Canford, but some of their other friendships from novice and Accepted days had chilled.

The searchers leave the Tower. Siuan starts to enjoy her work with Cetalia. Moiraine continues to have nightmares about the babe in the snow, but she manages to banish all the lace from her rooms except for the lace on her bed. Sheriam passed the test and joined the Blue, while Siuan managed to get the sixth kiss. She is said to bake excellent pies. Siuan wanted to let Sheriam in on their search, but Moiraine convinces her that it would be a bad idea. Several days later, Ryma Galfrey announced that Tamra had died in her sleep. For the funeral, Moiraine wears her palest dress, which emphasizes her bosom, as a penance. She says a few words at the funeral before Tamra's body is burned in flows of fire and her ashes spread over the Tower grounds by the Ajah she was raised from, according to her wishes. That night, Moiraine burns the dress she wore.

The Hall chooses Sierin Vayu, a Gray, as the next Amyrlin. The new Amyrlin soon dismisses all the male clerks from the Tower. She also exiled three sisters from the city for a year and had public birchings for two more. The new Amyrlin chose Amira, a red, as the new Mistress of Novices and her new Keeper was also a red, Duhara. Moiraine asks to be relieved of her duty with the bounty and Sierin grants her request, but orders her to stay in the city. Moiraine returns to a waiting Siuan to report, and decides to put her plan into action. She changes into a riding dress and packs a few things before heading to the stables. Eadyth talks with her and Moiraine says she won't be crossing any of the bridges, making it seem as if she will stay in the city as the Amyrlin commanded. She has Arrow saddled in the West Stable and heads for her bank in the city.

At the bank she collects several letters-of-rights and two hundred gold crowns. She borrows four of Mistress Dormaile's footmen and goes to Tamore's shop. There she has two of them purchase a travel chest and hire porters to carry it. She also changes into one of her Cairhienin dresses and removes her ring. She moves north through the city, purchasing needed supplies as she goes. Once she reaches Northharbor, she finds Bluewing, a ship leaving within the hour. While the ship is leaving the harbor, she notices a man matching Mistress Dormaile's description asking about her ship. The Bluewing seems to be a fast ship, as the captain promised. When she leaves the harbor, Moiraine feels a surge of freedom, even though she will have an angry Amyrlin and an assassin chasing her.

Lots and lots of little things happen in this chapter, which made it a pain to summarize. The part about the animosities between the Ajahs might be of some interest for those trying to sort out the tangled web of politics within the Tower. Although as Moiraine remarks, those alliances can shift over night. That was a close call with Sheriam, as they almost let somebody in on their plan who either was or soon will be Black. Sierin is a fun Amyrlin! She doesn't last too long, but she is a mean one. Amira, her Mistress of Novices, dies at Dumai's Wells and before that ended up as a Sitter for the Red before giving up her spot to Elaida. Duhara seems to be another Red chummy with Elaida; she remained loyal during the split and was sent to Caemlyn as advisor to Elayne. She may also be listed in Verin's book. I think this is the last time we see the mysterious assassin in New Spring, and I'm not sure we ever see him again.

Chapter 15: Into Canluum

Summary: Lan and Bukama are in Kandor, heading towards Canluum. People are staring at them since they wear the hadori, but Lan ignores it and looks towards the Blight to the north. He notes that as they are entering town, some are asked to remove their hoods, as it is law in the Borderlands, to prevent the Eyeless from infiltrating towns. Lan is greeted by a young guard, who thought he was dead. Bukama angrily insults the man, as he has sworn to a Kandori lord yet says he will ride with Lan. They nearly get into a fight with the guards over Bukama's insult, and Bukama must pledge to keep the peace and not draw his sword within Canluum in order to be allowed into the city. Lan is amazed that Bukama would pledge so. They make their way into the city and Bukama is strangely silent about things that should normally have gotten some reaction out of him, such as Nazar Kurenin, one who no longer wore the hadori. Lan decides to avoid the palace as it will inconvenience themselves and the Lord Marcasiev. Lan is worried about Bukama's present mood as they search for a place to stay.

Mostly just a short chapter reintroducing the Lan story arc. We get more info about Lan's past and the traditions of Malkier, but not much. We also learn that something odd is going on, as evidenced by the young guard's reaction, but we don't learn what it is in this chapter. Lan does mention there are many Aes Sedai about in the Borderlands, possibly due to rumors of men who can channel. We also have a small appearance by Nazar Kurenin, who gets discussed a bit but doesn't appear to be in any other books. Perhaps we'll see him in one of the last two, or he could just be a throwaway. We'll see the effect of Bukama's oath in the next chapter.

Chapter 16: The Deeps

Summary: Lan and Bukama go to the Deeps, a poorer part of the city, but no less crowded. The first three inns they try are full. They enter the Blue Rose, the fourth inn, and the Kandori innkeeper gave Bukama a kiss. She then complains that it has been six years after punching him in the jaw. Then she kisses him again. Ryne Venamar joins Lan and comments that the innkeeper can probably Bukama a place to sleep, and Lan as well. Lan figures Ryne probably won't be a great surprise for Bukama in his present mood. They sit to drink and Lan is rather forcibly invited to share the night with Lira, their serving maid. According to Malkieri ways, women chose when to enter bed and when to leave it. Ryne doesn't seem to understand it, holding to Arafellin ways.

Ryne tells him that Edeyn Arrel has raised the Golden Crane in Lan's name and is in Chachin, the capital of Kandor. Lan is surprised to hear this news. He leaves Ryne to check on his horse, thinking about this news. After the groom leaves the stable hurriedly, Lan realizes he has been walking in a stance called Leopard in High Grass and gripping his sword tightly. Lan sits cross-legged and assumes the ko'di to use the emotionless void it provided. He thinks about the four gifts he was given in his cradle: the ring of Malkieri kings, the locket around his neck with his parents' portraits painted inside, the sword at his side and an oath sworn in his name.

He muses on the death of Malkier and why Edeyn would want to try bringing it back. She has power over him, as his carneira, his first lover. His musings are interrupted when Bukama enters the stables, having learned about the Golden Crane. Bukama wonders what Lan will do and they discuss the situation. Lan suggests they go to the common room and twits Bukama about the price of their rooms. Bukama responds by making a comment about Lira and they walk out of the stables to find six men coming towards them. Lan orders Bukama into the stable, as he has no sword. Bukama bars the door as ordered and Lan faces the men, taking several injuries, but manages to kill all six of them. Patrons of the inn come out to find the bodies and wonder at his ability to survive the attack. Ryne mentions that these men may have been sent by Edeyn, but Lan sees no reason to connect her name to it and decides he will head to Chachin. Ryne decides to come with Lan and Bukama to the capitol, while Lan thinks facing the Blight would be easier than facing Edeyn.

Lan is pretty awesome in this little fight here, so I'd suggest you read it for yourself. We get a lot more of the Malkieri traditions here too, some of which are a bit strange. I suppose we can contrast this raising of the Golden Crane with the one later on. Nyneave gets it started there, while here we have Edeyn starting it, apparently after Lan is thought to be dead. We don't have a reaction yet from Lan with regards to Nyneave's work to get him an army, so it will be interesting to see that in the next book, or the last. Lan and Bukama also now have a traveling companion in Ryne; we'll learn more about him later. He makes much of the fact that Lan took on six men, yet Lan later says he is the better swordsman. Probably getting a bit ahead there, but this looks like a good place to stop for now.

Hopefully the last chapters of New Spring will be up later this week. For now, Stay Awesome!

New Spring Part 1

Welcome to my Commentary for the only currently published prequel novel of The Wheel of Time. I'll do a brief summary for each chapter and discuss some of the content in relation to the novel and the series as a whole. There may be spoilers up to and including The Gathering Storm, you have been warned.

New Spring the novel is based off of a short story in Legends, which my brother has and I have read once or twice. It is rather short for a Wheel of Time novel at a bit over 300 pages, but it is very tightly focused on several characters. It is the story of how Lan becomes Moiraine's warder, but also how Moiraine and Siuan start their search for the Dragon Reborn. I'm not sure it would make such a good starting point for the series as I think The Eye of the World does a very good job of framing the narrative of the series and sinking hooks into the reader. (I will admit to a probable bias on my part, I did read The Eye of the World in a single day that first time.) I think New Spring makes more sense if you have read all the other (or at least the first five or six) novels of the main series first. The novel does a good job of standing on its own, I think, but I would and have recommended people start with the main series first. My summaries will be extremely brief, so you should really read along with the book. And with that, let us begin.

Chapter 1: The Hook

Summary: Lan is checking on the sentries after three days of fighting in the snow outside of Tar Valon. In the course of his rounds, a rude Tairen officer delivers a message from Lord Emares. He wants Lan to move his troops into position to be the anvil for the Lord's hammer, catching "five or six hundred Aiel" between them. Bukama, Lan's companion, rouses his men and they head for a ridge called "the Hook" on which to situate themselves for the strike on the Aiel. On the ridge, they are ready with their bows when a large column of Aiel come out the the trees in front of them, several times what the Tairen had estimated. Lan and his troops prepare to face these Aiel when suddenly the column halts and then shouts something in the Old Tongue before moving to avoid Lan's men, heading eastward.

There is a whole lot of stuff shoved into chapter one, Jordan does a great job of dumping tons of information in a relatively short number of pages. I'll also note that there is no prologue nor is there a glossary. We're introduced to Lan's history and the fact that Bukama has been his teacher for most of his life, after he was taken out of doomed Malkier. We see Lan as a leader of men here, something we may see more of at the end of the series. We'll get to the part later where he reiterates his vow not to lead men into the Blight. He initially got involved in this war because he thought the Aiel were Darkfriends, but no longer sees it that way.

There were some little things in this chapter which tied it to the main series. I'll point out one line in particular which I found interesting: "Lan pulled his looking glass from the leather case tied to his saddle. It was a good glass, Cairhienin made, and when he pressed the brass-bound tube to his eyes, the Aiel, still a mile off, seemed to leap closer." I know this came after much of the series was already written, at least this longer version of New Spring, but you have to admire the way he puts in these details. I don't think it is too far of a stretch to imagine this glass may have come from the same workshop that made Rand his own rather large looking glass. Well, it is a stretch, but at least the same country (although I seem to recall something about the maker living in one of the towns ransacked when the Shaido storm onto the scene, but it has been a while so I might be wrong.) At the very least, there is a nice parallel here to Rand's use of the looking glass against the Aiel in the Shaido Siege. Perhaps I'm stretching here? I find it funny that Lan is wondering why all these trumpets are sounding. Ha. Take your pick: Laman Damodred is dead, the Dragon Reborn has been born or the Aiel are heading back to the waste. Admittedly the explicit reason is probably the first.

Chapter 2: A Wish Fulfilled

Summary: As Accepted, Moiraine and Siuan are waiting on the Amyrlin Seat, Tamra Ospenya and her Keeper, Gitara Moroso in the Amyrlin's sitting room. Moiraine wants to hear one of Gitara's Foretellings. Moiraine thinks how she and Siuan have advanced in their training in lock step, and will probably match Elaida's record of shortest time as novice and Accepted (three years each.) Tamra orders them to make tea and they do, using the Power to heat the water. As Moiraine reaches to give Gitara her cup of tea when she stands up suddenly stands up and cries:
He is born again! I feel him! The Dragon takes his first breath on the slope of Dragonmount! He is coming! He is coming! Light help us! Light help the world! He lies in the snow and cries like the thunder! He burns like the sun!
Gitara gasps and falls into Moiraine's arms, bringing them both to the carpet. She is dead and the Amyrlin orders them to lie about what happened. There was no Foretelling as far as anyone is concerned.

The Foretelling is probably the most important part of this chapter, but I'd like to point out something a bit more interesting. Siuan and Moiraine replaced Temaile and Brendas on Amyrlin attendance duty. If Gitara had been a few hours sooner (or Rand perhaps), a future Black Ajah member would have heard. From Verin's notes, she may not have been Black at the time. Either she was a Darkfriend before coming to the tower or became one after being raised. Still, she was one of the Thirteen who left the Tower with Liandrin. Incidentally, Brendas was part of the circle which healed Mat and joins the rebels at Salidar. Actually, I believe Jordan did a rather good job of making many of the Aes Sedai, Accepted and novices we see in New Spring ones we see in the main series. Easier when you write the book after many of the main series ones, but it is nice to see younger versions of people we've already met. The length of training times are important for determining hierarchy (once we learn how that works) and of course for the Supergirls to blast apart.

Chapter 3: Practice

Summary: Moiraine and Siuan are disturbed by what they have just witnessed and decide to practice for the testing (to become Aes Sedai.) Moiraine mentions how Siuan, the fisherman's daughter, is the leader between the two of them. She also mentions how she believes Siuan will be Amyrlin one day. Siuan expresses her desire to explore the world. Moiraine reflects on some of their more memorable pranks. Siuan weaves a ward against eavesdropping in one of their rooms and Moiraine begins to practice, quickly distracted when Siuan begins to discuss the implications of Gitara's Foretelling. Myrelle, a fellow Accepted, bursts into their room. Together Myrelle and Siuan help Moiraine practice before another Accepted, Tarna, barges in to announce that the novices have a free day and that the Accepted have been ordered to assemble for an address before the Amyrlin. Oh, and that Gitara has died. They all rush to the Oval Lecture Hall where they chat with Zemaille, a Sea Folk Accepted, and Aisling Noon, a Tuatha'an Accepted, before Tamra arrives. She announces that the Accepted will go out and collect the names and other relevant information for children born during the fighting around Tar Valon, as the Tower wishes to give a bounty to every woman who bore a child during that time. Moiraine and Siuan are excited to leave the city.

We learn a little about weaves for the testing process from Accepted to Aes Sedai, but not much else about the test. We'll see Moiraine's later on. Again we meet some interesting people who will play an important part later. Perhaps most notable of the ones I've mentioned are Myrelle, who is part of the Salidar Six along with some other stuff, and Aisling, who ends up as one of the sisters bonded after the botched Black Tower raid. I'd also like to note that Zemaille becomes a Brown and one of the keepers of the Thirteenth Depository (along with some other Sea Folk Aes Sedai.) Makes me wonder who planned that out and whether or not these sisters report back to the Sea Folk. Seems like most of the people Moiraine and Siuan run into play some role in the events of the main series.

Chapter 4: Leaving the Tower

Summary: Moiraine hurries to pack some things before rushing out of her room for the stables. She finds Siuan waiting for her in the hallway. They see many other Accepted rushing about to get ready as well. At the stables, Moiraine checks on the supplies packed for their trip to the camps, finding that she packed a bunch of things that she won't need. She also remarks on Siuan's poor riding skills. They head for the gates, escorted by eight Tower Guards. Siuan tries to negotiate with the leader of their escort but he sticks to his orders and leads them through the city. Outside, they stop on one of the bridges, their way barred by Whitecloaks. The Whitecloaks ride off and they are eventually able to make their way to one of the camps closer to Tar Valon. They get a table set out for them and some braziers for warmth.

There were lots of names mentioned here, some of which I've talked about previously. In the interest of time, I won't go into them all here, you can take a look if you feel so inclined. I never really felt that so many of these major players were so (relatively) new to the shawl when we meet them later. Then again, I suppose they have the agelessness and not all of them breezed through training like Moiraine and Siuan did. Also notable in this, besides some nice Ogier-made structure descriptions, is the confrontation with the Whitecloaks. Or more like the stand-off-from-a-distance. Contrast that with the confrontation when Verin and company are bringing the Horn and Mat to the Tower. I think it was Egwene who gives the Whitecloaks a bit of her damane training while Verin is rather displeased. Not much else to say here.

Chapter 5: The Human Heart

Summary: Moiraine decides it won't be as comfortable as she first thought out here in the cold. The women of the camp are massed in front of their table and are pushing and shoving, despite the efforts of the Guardsmen. Siuan stands up on her stool and uses a weave of the Power to shout for their attention. Once she has it, she lets the weave drop and tells them to line up and be orderly, chiding them for how they have been behaving. Then Moiraine and Siuan begin to write down names and other information. Quickly Moiraine becomes daunted by the sheer magnitude of the task before them. Moiraine helps Susa Wynn and her child by giving them some coin, despite the child's age, as her husband died before the fighting and she has been starving herself to feed her sick child. Word spreads, and a greedy mother comes up looking for a handout. Moiraine offers to Heal the child and the mother quickly leaves. They stop taking names to have a quick lunch when two sisters ride into camp. Meilyn Arganya and her warder and Elaida. Meilyn remarks that Elaida has taken too much interest in the two Accepted before explaining to Moiraine why there are so many women with children in the camps. The White and the Red leave, letting the two Accepted get back to taking names. They work past when the Guardsmen wanted to leave and are forced to make haste back to the Tower so they don't get punished for a late arrival. Katerine, an Accepted, informs Moiraine that Merean, the Mistress of Novices, wants to see her. Once in the study, Merean informs her that her Laman is dead, as are two of her other uncles. Moiraine tries to sleep that night but has nightmares, so she joins Siuan in her room. Neither of them are able to get any restful sleep that night.

Moiraine's charity there reminds me a bit of Elayne (and Siuan could stand in for Nynaeve complaining about the coin she is spending.) Moiraine and Siuan wonder why Elaida follows Meilyn around as she really hasn't deferred to anyone since she attained the shawl. We learn later that this is because Meilyn is stronger than Elaida, but the Accepted don't know the Strength Hierarchy Rules yet. Moiraine doesn't really have much of a reaction to her uncles' deaths, as they were rather cruel men. I found Moiraine's question to Meilyn rather amusing, especially when the White explains it.

Chapter 6: Surprises

Summary: Setsuko, a novice expected to be asked to leave the Tower soon, wakes Moiraine and Siuan up, telling them that the Accepted are to go to the stables again today. Moiraine goes to her room to get ready and comes out to find Siuan already prepared and talking with Sheriam, another accepted. They have confirmation that the Aiel are retreating. Merean is in the Accepteds quarters and tells Moiraine that she won't be joining the other Accepted in their task as she must be in shock. She has unsuccessfully tried to get the Amyrlin to keep all the Accepted in the Tower and is angry. Moiraine is to decipher the lists from the previous day and copy them out so they are legible and Siuan gets volunteered to help her. Moiraine tells Siuan about her uncles as they copy out the lists from the first day. They have decided this will allow them access to more names for their search. They finish that first day's sheets and go to bed, Moiraine continues to have nightmares about the boychild.

The next day, they come back to the tiny room and begin work on the prior day's stack. Clerks come in soon after and are displeased. After a few minutes more of work, Tamra herself enters to question them, and Moiraine manages to get ink on her dress. After a few questions, and her consent that they can continue their work, Tamra leaves. Tamra advised Moiraine about her dress and the ink, which Moiraine realizes means she practically told her to use the Power to clean the stain. Siuan doesn't understand how Moiraine gets that interpretation out of Tamra's words. They find a few potential names and write them down. Later, Jarna Malari, a Gray Sitter, asks to speak with Moiraine. They talk of Cairhien and who will ascend to the throne now, during which Moiraine realizes that she herself is being considered for the throne. Six other Sitters, one from each of the other Ajahs, talk to Moiraine about the throne that day. Tsutama, a Red Sitter, is the most direct in her questioning. Moiraine has a new nightmare that night.

This chapter has some nice moments between Siuan and Moiraine and we get beat over the head about Moiraine's ability with the Game of Houses and Siuan's ability to puzzle out things but apparently not the Game of Houses. Clearly Siuan is able to learn, as we see in the main series. More talk of the impending testing as well. Then we have a new fear for Moiraine. She could have been an Aes Sedai ruler, just as Elayne becomes. It is important to note that she doesn't want to be ruler of Cairhien because she doesn't like the way the politics of her land would force her to kidnap, bribe, blackmail or even assassinate her rivals. She'll mention this later, but for now it is introduced as a way to get her out of the Tower after her test. She wants to get away from the Tower so she can find the boy and now so she doesn't get made a Queen. Oh, and hello Jarna! Jarna was head of the Black (perhaps at this time) and participates in the torture and murder of Tamra. Oh, and she orders the search for the Dragon Reborn and his murder, which gets Ishy mad enough to drop her into a ter'angreal. I get the feeling Jordan mentions Tsutama because she also plays a big role in the main series, including becoming the head of the Reds and agreeing to the plan for them to bond men of th eBlack Tower as Warders. We still don't know the outcome of that delegation, other than it didn't sound so wonderful for them at the end of Knife of Dreams.

Chapter 7: The Itch

Summary: They return to more names the following day and Moiraine realizes that somebody will have to visit these mothers and ask careful questions. Tamra comes in and remarks that they are still working there. Then she suddenly gives Moiraine a note and tells her to take it to Kerene Nagashi. Moiraine makes her way to the Green Ajah quarters. She sees Rina Hafden with two warders, Waylin and Elyas, practicing. She sees several other warders and sisters before reaching Kerene's room and handing her the note. Moiraine learns that the note says Tamra wants to speak with Kerene urgently. She is dismissed and heads back to copy down more names. She meets Siuan on her way back. Siuan has delivered a similar note to Aisha Raveneos. They reason that Tamra is gathering searchers to look for the boychild. The next day they deliver three more messages; to Meilyn Arganya, to Valera Gorovni and to Ludice Daneen. They deliver no further messages. Aeldra Najaf is raised as Keeper to replace Gitara. Moiraine and Siuan try to keep watch on the Amyrlin's study but are caught by Aeldra, who wonder why they continue with the work. She also asks after Moiraine's dreams, and is told that Verin has given Moiraine a concoction to help her sleep. That is the end of their spying, as Aeldra warns them she will take notice if she catches them again.

All these references to Verin are interesting, especially in light of what we learn in The Gathering Storm. The main purpose of this chapter was to introduce us to Tamra's searchers. Or really just to tell us that Tamra is working on that problem, even as our two Accepted gather their names and make vague plans for the future. Also in this chapter are Elyas and his Aes Sedai. Hello future Wolfbrother. Rina is mentioned rather briefly by name in one of the other books, but don't ask me which one. One or the other of them, or both, have been shielding themselves from the bond. I forget exactly what we learn there. We learned he was a warder very early on in the series though. As far as I can recall, we never see Aeldra outside of New Spring, so not really sure what became of her.

As I am about a third of the way through New Spring, I'll stop here. Blogger is not being nice right now, so the formatting on this isn't quite where I want it yet. Trying to negotiate some compromises here. Blasted permanent italics...

Until next time, Stay Awesome and may you always find water and shade.

Wheel of Time Challenge 2010 and Commentary

Back in the excitement surrounding the release of the 12th book of the Wheel of Time, The Gathering Storm, I was alerted to Book Love Affair's Wheel of Time Challenge 2010. I wasn't sure if I wanted to participate in it at the time, but I decided to go ahead and do that the night before I left to come back up to UCLA. I've also decided I'll add my own little twist.

Every time I pick up The Wheel of Time books to start a new re-read, I promise myself I will take notes about all the little things I find (especially things I missed the last time through). Inevitably this resolve melts when I get sucked into the story and don't want to be bothered with stopping to write down my thoughts as I go. The last full read through I did was in the summer of 2008, when there were only 12 books (if you include New Spring, which I did for that re-read.) I want to read them all up to The Gathering Storm this year, preferably before Towers of Midnight, book 13, is released. The way I've decided to do this is to read basically a book a month according to the Challenge, and write down my thoughts throughout the month as I go.

January is going to be a bit tough because I'm doing New Spring and The Eye of the World. I decided to start with the prequel because I wanted to read that this year, and it fits better chronologically rather than pub date, especially for the purposes of the Challenge, which currently does not include reading New Spring. I've already finished the prequel as of a few days ago, so I will try to do most of the posting about that this week. I will probably do a brief summary of each chapter and then some commentary. In the interests of time, this probably won't be as extensive as the summary and commentary Leigh Butler does for her Wheel of Time Re-Read at Tor.com. I'm doing each book in about a month, so I don't really have the time to do too much. I will link to the relevant Tor.com posts in my posts. (New Spring hasn't been done yet, not sure when Leigh will do it, but presumably she will eventually cover it.)

I'd also like to state for the record that this is what I hope to do during the year. I'm already a bit behind due to an illness last week which I'm still working to recover from and I have just recently hit upon some computer issues which are rather worrying. Right now I am in school, which is fairly busy, but I can make time for this, I think. The unknown quantity will be when I graduate this June and (hopefully) start my career. I don't know yet where I will be working or what type of time I'll have to continue this read through and commentary. We'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

(I haven't really utilized this place as I first intended to so far, so this will hopefully get me writing up posts regularly. Ideally I'll have time for some non-WOT stuff as well. Also, I really need to spend some time customizing the look of this thing, because currently it is rather boring. The days are not long enough. I want to get a post up tonight or tomorrow, or really both days, but I have events and meetings both nights so we'll see.)
